Lesson Outline

South Africans are constantly considering life abroad.
However, very few of them consider and understand the tax implications of changing residency and the difference between legal and tax residency.
This course aims to clarify the tax residency concept and assist taxpayers in applying it appropriately.

This lesson covers the following:
• Distinguishing between “legal,” “ex-con,” and tax residency
• Effective timing of becoming and ceasing to be a tax resident
• The base costs when commencing residency and the exit taxes upon ceasing to be tax resident
• Declaring a change in residency to SARS and obtaining a Tax Compliance Status Pin, including the supporting documents required and the eFiling functionality
• The impact of emigration and changing tax residency on the withdrawal of lump sums, including the latest tax amendments from SARS and the National Treasury
• The exchange control regulations for transferring funds to a foreign country (applicable to residents and non-residents)
